The Judge hearing the proceedings remarked that Tilbury had suffered considerable disruption in his career owing to the injury. He pointed out that such gross negligence in mixing up live and non-live ammunition together was bound to result in such an accident.

HSE officials investigating the incident pointed out that risk assessment had in fact taken place, and the hazards of non-maintenance of ammunition in a systematic and easily accessible manner had been identified.
