JSP: Java on Your Server

JSP stands for Java Server Pages. The idea of JSP is to allow
Java code to be embedded in HTML - this is done uising XML tags.
JSP allows you to dynamically add content to your pages, and
also offers the facility to send Java to the web browser easily.

The Lack of Functions

Most of the built-in JSP functions do nothing more than flow
control: it barely offers any built-in functions at all.
Instead, you have to define your own tags using tag libraries.
This makes the language extremely extensible, but not much use
if you just want to get started quickly and write a simple
database-driven website.

The most significant reason to use JSP is that it gives you all
the power of Java when it comes to adding things to your HTML
pages. In big companies especially, these Java capabilities are
very important. The flexibility of the language is also very
useful for larger projects: in some ways, JSP is more like a
‘build your own programming language kit’ than it is a language
in itself.

Separating the Application Logic

The real point of JSP is to separate out your application’s
logic (the part that does things) from its presentation (the
HTML). JSP is, basically, a very minimal language intended to do
little more than help turn the output of a Java application into
a web page. This has the advantage of letting you write an
entirely new website using your existing application as the
backend - but it has the disadvantage that it can be difficult
to add any new functions to the site unless you know what you’re
doing in Java.

Unfortunately, the downside of doing things this way is that, if
you’re not strict about it, HTML code will have a tendency to
start creeping into the output of the backend Java application.
If that happens, it will make it difficult to rewrite your JSPs
without ending up with broken web pages.

Is Java a Good Idea?

One of the advantages of JSP is that it can easily take Java
applets and throw them onto the web. When it comes down to it,
though, Java isn’t usually a good idea. Why? Well, it takes a
long time to load, it’s slow when it does load, and it doesn’t
tend to do anything that couldn’t have been done better in Flash
or even in plain old HTML. On the web, Java has come to be
considered harmful.

On the server, though, Java is a fine idea, at least if you’re
good enough to program in it. There are simpler languages out
there, but Java is cross-platform, standardised and does pretty
much everything you could want it to. You will, though, need a
pretty powerful server to use Java for any significant number of
requests.

JSP or ASP?

JSP is obviously named to point out the fact that it is an
alternative to Microsoft’s ASP. So why would you use one instead
of the other. Well, while ASP has the simplicity of Visual Basic
on its side, JSP has the power of Java, and, more importantly,
its cross-platform capabilities. While ASP will tie you down to
a Microsoft platform, JSP can be used on any operating system
capable of running Java - and that’s just about all of them.

JSP or ColdFusion?

What JSP and ColdFusion have in common is that they can both
interact with Java - but which is better? For most projects, the
answer is ColdFusion: if you’re building something relatively
small (meaning non-enterprise), ColdFusion’s built-in functions
should be sufficient and the code shouldn’t be able to grow so
large as to be unmanageable.

Should JSP Stay in the Enterprise?

People with small website usually fall into one of two camps:
the vendor-devoted people who are quite happy to run their whole
system on Microsoft or Macromedia products because it saves them
time, and the open source devotees who use languages like PHP
because it saves them money and they support the principles
involved. Among these two camps, there isn’t really much room
for JSP, and in most cases, there shouldn’t be. Unless you’re
building a project that’s larger than the average, or you’ve
already got a Java application you want to write a web interface
for, you’ll probably be better off giving JSP a miss.

How To Look For Baby Books

Look for Books! The books that you pick to read with your
child is very important. If you aren’t sure of what books
are right for your child, ask a librarian to help you choose
titles.

Introduce your child to books when she or he is a baby. Let
her/him hold and play with books made just for babies: board
books with study cardboard covers and thick pages; cloth
books that are soft and washable, touch-and-feel books, or
lift-the-flap books that contain surprises for your baby to
discover. Choose books with covers that have big, simple
pictures of things that she/he sees every day. Don’t be
upset if at first your child chews or throws a book. Be
patient. Cuddling with the child as you point to and talk
with great excitement about the book’s pictures will soon
capture her interest. When your baby becomes a toddler, she
will enjoy helping to choose books for you to read to her.

As your child grows into a preschooler and kindergartner,
the two of you can look for books that have longer stories
and more words on the pages. Also look for books that have
repeating words and phrases that she can begin to read or
recognize when she sees them. By early first grade, add to
this mix some books designed for beginning readers,
including some books that have chapters and some books that
show photographs and provide true information rather than
make-believe stories.

Keep in mind that young children most often enjoy books
about people, places, and things that are like those they
know. The books can be about where you live or about parts
of your culture, such as your religion, your holidays, or
the way that you dress. If your child has special interests,
such as dinosaurs or ballerinas, look for books about those
interests.

From your child’s toddler years through early first grade,
you also should look for books of poems and rhymes. Remember
when your baby heard your talking sounds and tried to
imitate them? Rhymes are an extension of that language
skill. By hearing and saying rhymes, along with repeated
words and phrases, your child learns about spoken sounds and
about words. Rhymes also spark a child’s excitement about
what comes next, which adds fun and adventure to reading.

Market Timing - Getting It Right For Huge Profits!

Market timing is a misunderstood concept and it’s a fact that most traders time their entry points incorrectly and lose.

Follow the simple tips below and you will find you can enter trades with better market timing, when the odds are in your favour and profitability is at its highest. Use the simple tips below and get better accuracy in your market timing and bigger profits.

Study the weekly charts

The weekly charts are a fantastic way of seeing the long term trend, yet very few traders use them.

Fact is you want to trade the long term trends, as these yield the biggest profits and there is no better way of identifying this trend than looking at the weekly charts.

Use them in the following way.

1. Look for the direction of the trend.

2. Look for important and valid resistance and support.

Daily Charts

Look for the trend again and if it lines up with the one on the weekly chart, you have potential trade in the making.

Look again for important valid support and resistance (sometimes they line up at exactly the same levels and these are best trades of all)

1. Look to place orders at break of support or resistance.

2. Don’t jump in a trade in advance you are going to need confirmation.

Now we need to look at correct market timing.

Get the odds in your favour with oscillators.

Breaks of support and resistance identified in the above way have good odds of developing into great trends, if they occur at significant market tops or bottoms.

Note: Most major big trends occur from important market highs or lows, it’s these high and low points you need to trade.A break from these points needs to be validated and then correct market timing is used to enter the trade.

The best way to achieve accurate market timing is to use the stochastic indicator.

The best momentum indicator

This indicator gives you the short term momentum and gives you a very accurate tool for correct market timing. If it indicates momentum in the trades favour as the break occurs its time to get in.

There is no better short term momentum indicator to time entry points and confirm a move and every trader should have it as part of their trading strategy.

Does this simple method work?

Yes it does and the reason is rooted in investor psychology.

Most traders like to time their trades and be early so they don’t miss part of the move if it occurs. The problem is the “if”

If a move has not occurred why trade it? Don’t impose your view on the market - let the market tell you when its time to get in and this is reflected in momentum.

Don’t guess, wait for confirmation and only trade in this way, this will help you avoid trading markets that are not trending strongly.

Keep in mind that these breakout points are important and if their supported by short term momentum then odds favour the trend will continue.

As the well known saying goes “a trend in motion is more likely to continue than reverse.”

Trade infrequently

You won’t get many trades per year trading in this way (the big moves only come a few times) but you will hit the trades with the greatest profit potential.

Market timing is all about getting the odds in your favour and catching the big trending moves and this simple method does exactly that.

Grassroots Leadership Principles - a Review of It’s Your Ship

At the age of 36, Michael Abrashoff was selected to become Commander of the USS Benfold - at the time, the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific Fleet. The immediate challenges that faced him were staggering: Exceptionally low morale with unacceptably high turnover. Few thought that this ship could improve. In many ways, the Benfold was actually an extreme example of the same problems facing many organizations today.

As the new head of his own command Michael only became more resolved. “In my induction ceremony, my predecessor left to cheers. The crew was actually clapping as he and his family departed. I knew then that command and control leadership was dead.”

“A lot of people do whatever it takes to secure the next promotion. All I ever wanted to do in the navy was to command a ship. I did not care if I ever got promoted again. And that attitude enabled me to do the right things for my people instead of doing the right things for my career. Along the way, it was my people that created the results that ensured my next promotion.”

The solution was to establish a system of beliefs that Michael calls GrassRoots Leadership - a process of replacing command and control with commitment and cohesion by engaging the hearts, minds, and loyalties of workers.

In his book, It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from The Best Damn Ship in the Navy, Michael states that, “The most important thing that a captain can do is to see the ship through the eyes of the crew.”

To Michael, this meant interviewing every single person on his ship, from the most senior officer to the newest recruit — an experience that began to generate the most invaluable ideas, often from the most unexpected sources. For example, through one of these meetings Michael was able to address one of the most demoralizing roles of the crew: relentless chipping and painting had always been a standard task for a ship’s youngest sailors, the individuals that Michael most wanted to connect with. One of these sailors simply suggested replacing the rusting hardware with stainless-steel nuts and bolts.

“I took our credit card and bought the stainless steel hardware that day,” Michael commented. “Those guys didn’t pick up a paintbrush the rest of the time I was on board.” Today, the entire navy uses that process - a solution that began from GrassRoots efforts.

GrassRoots Leadership is a philosophy that empowers every individual to share the responsibility of achieving excellence. GrassRoots Leadership has as its core tenets:

• Lead by Example - GrassRoots Leaders know they must first change their own attitudes and behaviors before expecting their crew to change.

• Listen Aggressively - GrassRoots Leaders don’t simply listen, they hear what their people are telling them. They know that those on the front lines are the most familiar with how operations can be more effective.

• Communicate Purpose and Meaning - GrassRoots Leaders help their crew understand (collectively and individually) how their work contributes to the success of the overall mission, as well as understand how that work supports the personal goals they have for themselves.

• Create a Climate of Trust - GrassRoots Leaders trust and cultivate trust from their crew. Without trust, the barriers that prevent excellent performance will never be lowered.

• Look for Results, Not Salutes - GrassRoots Leaders maximize performance by making their people grow. They succeed only where their people succeed.

• Take Calculated Risks - GrassRoots Leaders know that taking prudent, calculated risks is instrumental in maximizing performance.

• Go Beyond Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) - GrassRoots Leaders look at standard operating procedure as a guideline, because SOP doesn’t change as rapidly as the environment and competition. Therefore, they foster a climate that encourages people to come up with better and more innovative ways to accomplish their mission.

• Strengthen Others/Build Up Your People - GrassRoots Leaders focus on making their people grow and creating an environment where everyone can win, thereby making the entire team stronger.

• Generate Unity - GrassRoots Leaders work to not only change undesirable behaviors but to alter the underlying attitudes. By working toward a mutual respect for everyone, they level the playing field, permitting everyone to perform at their highest level.

• Cultivate Quality of Life - GrassRoots Leaders actively integrate fun into the work experience. They want their crew to have as much fun from 9 to 5 as they do at home from 5 to 9; thereby, gaining the passion, enthusiasm and creativity that they usually lock in their car in the parking lot each morning.

By every measure, these principles were able to achieve breakthrough results. Personnel turnover decreased to an unprecedented 1%. The rate of military promotions tripled, and operating expenses were slashed by 25%. USS Benfold became regarded as the finest ship in the Pacific Fleet, winning the prestigious Spokane Trophy for having the highest degree of combat readiness.

His first book, It’s Your Ship, has sold over hundreds of thousands of copies and is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best Seller. While receiving accolades from such business-minded entities as Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and others, perhaps the greatest testament to Michael’s leadership style is represented by one of his crew, who published the following review of It’s Your Ship on Amazon.com:

Reviewer: EW3 Holly (Davis) Simpson from Louisville, KY December 11, 2003

I am a plankowner* of the Benfold and admired Capt. Abrashoff’s leadership. His superior leadership brought the morale of our ship from just ordinary shipboard life to a ship that many in the fleet wanted to become a part of. Our ship was a show-piece and we were proud to carry out his orders.

What could have been a horribly desolate six months on deployment, including the holidays spent in the Gulf in 97-98, turned into a memorable experience for all, thanks to Capt. Abrashoff who even made UnRep a grand event! We learned from him that although we had a VERY important job to conduct, we were rewarded with pride in our accomplishments. Capt. Abrashoff was a very approachable Commanding Officer, an experience I had never encountered in the military and has been rare while employed with state government. He made an effort to see that his crew not only did their jobs exceptionally well, but that we enjoyed the festivities he provided for the ship while in port.

I have read his fantastic book, reliving all the memories of my Benfold life and have used his leadership knowledge to become a successful professional in the “civilian” world. To the readers who feel Capt. Abrashoff is “arrogant” in his leadership style–I think if you had as awesome a ship as the Benfold to be a part of, you would be extremely proud of it and the leadership that made it such a fine place to spend a few years of your life.

Michael Abrashoff is originally from Altoona, Pennsylvania and is a 1982 graduate of the Naval Academy in Annapolis. He currently resides in Arlington, Virginia and has recently published his second book, Get Your Ship Together.

The Great Mideast Commission

When the time had come for Jews to return to Zion, God stirred up the spirit of Cyrus and the Jews (Ezra 1:1,5). Not everyone was willing to leave Babylon, having settled in, but others inspired with a pioneer spirit were willing to go back home and clear the way for those who would eventually follow (Jer. 29: 4-7).

Those Jews who stayed behind in Babylon were encouraged to assist those who were headed for the front line. Their consequent generosity went down on record, and revealed how eager and willing they were to be involved in such a historic project and holy mission. This partnership, based on a mutual respect, in GOD’S WORK OF RESTORATION, revealed they understood how some are COMMISSIONED to build with the materials others are contracted to provide. It’s most encouraging to know others are
behind you and that God blesses everyone’s genuine efforts (2 Cor. 9:10).

Now God’s time has come to RESTORE THE TRUE GOSPEL TO JERUSALEM! The Church began in Jerusalem and was prophesied to return just before the close of this dark age and the dawn of the Wonderful World Tomorrow (Matt. 24:16). The Jews were the first to be offered salvation and now they’ll be the last to receive it - but they will receive it (Zech. 12:10). Everything has come full circle (Matt. 23:39).

Read here what Mr. Armstrong taught:

“How are we preparing the way for Christ’s Messianic coming? In three ways:

1) by proclaiming and publishing worldwide the gospel of the Kingdom of
God…

2) by making ready a people for His coming… And

3) something that even I did not realize until recently we were also COMMISSIONED to do - clean up the filth and rubble in that area that was the original Jerusalem and City of David… Why is that important? Because Christ has said He will yet choose Jerusalem… His throne will be there.
Do you not suppose it will be in the very spot He chose for David’s throne? Where was David’s throne? It was on this very spot where we are
now cleaning up and hauling off the rubble of century after century of accumulation… That is the spot we are cleaning up!

So there is a physical preparing, as well as a spiritual, in preparing the way for Messiah’s Coming! Further, God says we are to SHOUT [not shut up], with amplified power, to the CITIES OF JUDAH the glad message that the Messiah is soon coming” - Autobiography of Herbert W Armstrong, Volume II, pages 469-470 (emphasis mine).

Isaiah 40:9

9 O Zion,
You who bring good tidings,
Get up into the high mountain;
O Jerusalem,
You who bring good tidings,
Lift up your voice with strength,
Lift it up, be not afraid;
Say to the CITIES OF JUDAH, “Behold your God!”

And during my Bible reading last night, this stood out:

2 Samuel 10:12

12 Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our People and for the
CITIES OF OUR GOD. And may the LORD do what is good in His sight.”

God says, and His apostle taught, we are to share the GOOD NEWS WITH JUDAH. None of the Church of God congregations have done this! What are we waiting for?

We must sound the alarm from Zion (Joel 2:1). What’s spoken in Jerusalem is heard around the world (Joel 3:16). We have the UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY - and responsibility - to warn Judah that a German-led Europe is about to make their move into the Middle East! We could do this through full page newspaper ads!

Europe’s Crusader spirit grows restless. Soon “Roman troops” will again occupy the Holy Land (Isaiah 40:9)! Who else can warn them? Who else can help restore Israel’s identity (Isa. 49:5), and say to Judah, “I am Joseph your brother”?

And doesn’t God’s Word imply an APOSTLE will be sent to the MIDDLE EAST (Isa. 41:27). Couldn’t such an apostle to Jerusalem and the Jews - getting God’s Word out to the cities of JUDAH - something Mr. Armstrong wanted to be and do but wasn’t empowered - be the chief spokesman (in the spirit of Elijah to the NATION) between the Two Witnesses and, as an envoy from the House of David, an anointed DAVIDIC MESSENGER, be
like GOD before the Jews in Jerusalem (Zech. 12:8)? Hasn’t God now shared the
possibility of such a revelation with us? (Isa. 48:6). Will we prepare the way?

Meanwhile, though, shouldn’t we do all that we can and WORK TOGETHER WITH JEWISH FRIENDS in Israel, whether sponsoring Israeli author Yair Davidiy’s translation of Israelite identity knowledge into Hebrew (www.britam.org), encouraging the Temple Mount Faithful in every way possible (www.templemountfaithful.org), plant a forest or create a garden in honor and memory of Herbert W. Armstrong, and help those faithful Jews living in pioneering communities (”settlements”) with whatever they need? Who else has any game plan? Let’s at least DO SOMETHING!

May God’s Church be open for suggestions and seriously consider our options. Time is running out!

Acme Juicer - Perfecting The Art Of Juicing

The Acme Juicer 6001 is a sturdy, commercial-kitchen quality,
centrifugal juicer with an exceptionally high juice yield.

The Waring Company, owner of Acme, has more than 60 years
experience in the manufacturing of high performance kitchen
products. It therefore comes as no surprise that a unit
associated with them, is this powerful and classy. The
beautifully designed stainless steel housing, will make it an
asset in any kitchen.

Give your body a well-deserved break from solid, energy-sapping
food! Juice any combination of the wide variety of fruits and
vegetables the Acme Juicer can accommodate, and enjoy what can
only be called a feast-in-a-glass.

Cutting the produce into pieces small enough to fit into the
chute of the juicer, is a bit of a chore. However, when you
taste the richly flavored, pure juice and experience the
health-benefit in areas such as energy, well-being, immune
function, and digestive function, you forget all about the
effort that went into the preparation!

Keep in mind that freshly extracted juice is actually
pre-digested food, and you will understand that the Acme Juicer
makes effortless absorption of all the nutrients your body
needs, possible. Drinking fresh juice is the best way to
de-stress your digestive system.

The technology involved in the juicer allows the stainless steel
inner basket to spin 60 times per second, forcing the juice
through tiny side openings. No wonder the pulp that adheres to
the side, is so dry! The juicer even makes short shrift of
tough, stringy veggies such as celery.

The efficient extraction process explains the high yield of the
Acme Juicer. Unfortunately the price one pays for the 20 to 35%
increase in juice quantity, is that the juicer doesn’t feature
automatic pulp ejection.

This minor inconvenience means that the inner basket will have
to be emptied manually from time to time while juicing. With a
capacity of 2 quarts, this isn’t too much of a drawback.

If you prefer a glass of fresh orange juice with breakfast, the
optional citrus attachment puts the brakes on your Acme Juicer,
converting the 3600 RPMs to 300 RPMs. You then have the torque
you need to squeeze juice loaded with Vitamin C from oranges,
tangerines, or grapefruit.

Cleaning your Acme Juicer isn’t complicated. All the components
simply lift out with the release of the patented clutch. A
unique feature is that the juicer comes with disposable filters,
for quick emptying of the residue in the basket. The filters are
made from non-bleached cellulose fiber.

The design of the patented Gyro Base eliminates vibration and
makes for a stable juicer while in use. Compared to other
centrifugal juicers, the Acme is kind to the ears! All the inner
components are made of durable stainless steel.

The unit carries a 10 year limited warranty, with a one year
warranty on the blade. It has a no-maintenance, induction-type
1/4 HP motor and weighs in at a manageable 15 pounds. The juicer
sports a self-adjusting clutch, that compensates for normal
wear. This feature adds to its durability.

The Acme Juicer 5001 is similar, but has a plastic bowl and lid,
and is about three pounds lighter than the 6001. The 5001 has a
5 year warranty. The citrus attachment can also be used on the
5001.

Every juicer has its pros and cons. This one seems to tip the
scale on the positive side. If quality is what you are looking
for in the juicer, as well as in the juice, you will find it in
the Acme Juicer.

Resistance Is Futile - Your Vehicle Will Be Maintained

I wonder how many of you pondered the challenge of promoting and selling ‘Preventive Maintenance’ to your customers. It’s quite amazing when you think about it, the way your customers can really dig their heels in. They just stubbornly resist your every good intention to part them from their money…

Oops! Did I say that out loud?

I meant to say, your every good intention to protect their vehicle and help them avoid that nasty of nastiest… like the 3 AM rain-soaked, dark and lonely, solo roadside picnic while awaiting the tow truck driver.

Because that’s the reality of it. Preventive Maintenance is all about avoiding the inconvenience of waiting around. Of being stranded somewhere when you’re on your way to somewhere else. Of losing time. Of missing something important. Of… heavens forbid… being late!

And that’s the problem, they (the general public) don’t quite ‘get it’ - well, to be fair, some do. But on the whole, the majority simply think you’re out to part them from their hard earned money.

They don’t seem to understand regularly inspecting a vehicle helps identify problems before they become serious, and to be fair, most of them don’t really understand the true cost of vehicle ownership.

For example, most people are either paying a loan or a lease payment, and of course they’re paying insurance and gas. So the thought of paying an additional ‘unnecessary’ preventive maintenance expense is somewhat irritating to them. They take the position ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’

I bet if you were to ask a dozen of your customers how much they should budget annually for vehicle maintenance repair they’d have no solid idea. The more confident ones might guess, but I’m betting they don’t really know what the industry standard amount is.

As you know, a suitable budget is about $100 a month. Usually consumed annually in two, maybe three visits to the shop. That’s an extra $1,200 to $1,500 your customer probably didn’t bargain on - so you can see why some are irritated at the idea.

Now I imagine some of you already have loyal customers who trust you implicitly - that’s fantastic. You may even have a stable customer base so that you seldom lose a customer, again that’s great.

However, remember approximately 10% of the local population moves yearly. This is according to the post office, they know because of the change of address requests. So this means most of you face the real possibility that 1 in 10 of your customers will leave every year or so.

So new customers have to be acquired and then retrained to trust you all over again. They might have had bad experiences with ‘lesser’ shops and on the whole you’ll need to carefully show them that you and your business are a solid, reputable and trustworthy place to take their vehicle.

You’ll have to gauge the right time to promote the concept of preventive maintenance too. You’ll need to educate and inform them about the true cost of vehicle ownership - if you’re brave enough you can take this article, make copies, and mail it to all your new customers. (You have my permission to reprint this article)

Include your business card and a hand written note. The hand writing part is important because it shows you care enough about your customer to personally take the time. Tell them you thought they’d appreciate the enclosed article because it’s an unbiased 3rd party opinion on this subject. And ask them to call you if they have any questions.

If nothing else, you would have established a unique relationship with this new client because you would have let them see ‘behind the curtain’ and this earns trust. They’ll read about the real costs and see the challenges you face and the reasons you try so hard to help them.

After all, “Resistance Is Futile - Their Vehicle Will Be Maintained…”

The Real Mayo Clinic Diet

Copyright 2005 Adam Waxler

What is the “real” Mayo Clinic Diet?

For over thirty years, the Mayo Clinic has been combating the
rumor that they recommend a version of a quick weight loss diet
that touts the consumption of grapefruit, vegetables, fruits and
unlimited portions of meat and fat.

The Mayo Clinic has repeatedly issued statements that the
so-called ‘Mayo Clinic Diet’ did not originate at the Mayo
Clinic and is not endorsed by them.

In fact, the Mayo Clinic has gone so far as to state that the
Mayo Clinic Diet may be unhealthy for some people.

A visit to the Mayo Clinic website will take you to the REAL
Mayo Clinic diet, and their recommendations and guidance for
weight loss that is healthy and permanent.

Summary:

Weight loss results from expending more calories than you
consume. The only way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories
than you use in your daily activities. The only way to achieve
permanent weight loss is by adopting a balanced, healthy diet
with portions that fit your lifestyle, and engage in regular
physical activity.

The healthiest, most beneficial diet for you is one that takes
your individuality into account. There is no one perfect weight
loss plan - not even one that will work for you for the rest of
your life. Your body needs different things at different stages.
Illnesses and allergies, high stress periods - all result in
changing nutritional needs for your body and therefore the need
for different weight loss plans

Basic Recommendations: The Seven Basic Rules

1. Eat more fruit and vegetables. 2. Reduce intake of saturated
fats and cholesterol 3. Cut back on sweets and salt 4. Drink
alcohol in moderation, if you must drink at all 5. Learn to eat
moderate portions of food 6. Control the number of calories you
consume 7. Include physical activity in your daily activities

The real Mayo Clinic diet emphasizes a balanced diet derived
largely from complex carbohydrates, fresh vegetables, little
meat, and careful choice of fat. They advocate slow, steady
weight loss rather than quick weight loss methods, and strongly
suggest that the best weight loss plans are those that can
become the basis for a lifelong change in eating habits. Along
with those general recommendations, the Mayo Clinic Nutrition
Center makes specific recommendations for each food group.

The basic recommendations made by the Mayo Clinic aren’t
ground-breaking. They advocate sensible eating, low calories and
increasing your physical activity. The suggestion to aim for 1-2
pounds of weight loss per week is echoed by nearly every other
medically noteworthy institute in the country. It’s a real diet
- the real Mayo Clinic Diet.

Second Mortgage Analysis - Fixed-Rate Equity Loan Versus a Home Equity Line of Credit

People tap into their home equity for a variety of reasons, with the two most common reasons being consolidating debts and making home improvements. The question is whether you should take out a home equity loan (second mortgage) or a home equity line of credit (HELOC). Each has its benefits and drawbacks.

Some of the advantages of both home equity loans and home equity lines include lower interest rates and potential tax savings, and both offer interest only payment options in case you are short on cash. With a home equity loan, you get a lump sum at the beginning of the loan that you start paying back immediately. A HELOC gives you a revolving, variable interest rate credit line that you don’t start paying back until you start using the line of credit.

According to the Federal Reserve, home equity lines of credit annual percentage rates (APRs) are based solely on a publicly available index (such as the prime rate published in the Wall Street Journal or a U.S. Treasury bill rate). However, it is an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) loan. With rising interest rates, they’ve gotten a lot more expensive, doubling to 8 percent in the past three years.

The Federal Reserve states that APR for traditional second mortgage loan takes into account the interest rate charged plus points and other finance charges.
